The trailer for Like A Dragon: Ishin! set the stage for the newly remastered game, which will be available to players outside of Japan for the first time since its release in 2014. The game is set in the Bakumatsu period of Japan, focusing heavily on a samurai, Sakamoto Ryoma, who seeks revenge before “spark[ing] the biggest revolution in Japanese history,” according to the trailer. Everything falls in Kyo, a fictional Kyoto. Yakuza character Kazuma Kiryu will appear as Sakamoto Ryoma, RGG Studio said on the PlayStation Blog. He continued: Like a Dragon: Ishin brings familiar faces to tell this epic historical tale. Fans will recognize our protagonist as Kazuma Kiryu from previous entries in the franchise. In Ishin, Kiryu plays as Sakamoto Ryoma and brings along the rest of his crew. Goro Majima and other Yakuza celebrities join Ryoma as friends and foes in this fictional world that trades the glamorous streets of Tokyo for the chaotic hustle and bustle of 1860s Kyo. These new character dynamics are as exciting as they are unexpected, with a series of impressive twists in a story that only RGG studio can tell. For the gameplay, there are of course swords, but also a gun. “Better yet, grab both a gun and a sword and go on a Wild Dancer-style rampage,” Sega of America global community manager David Hinds wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “And when you’re feeling really brutal, smash some skulls with your bare fists using Brawler style.” Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! originally released on February 22, 2014 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Since the release of Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! in 2014, the Yakuza franchise it’s based on has become widely popular outside of Japan — and it only makes sense to bring more games from its suite of titles to the current generation of consoles. The latest release in the Yakuza series, Yakuza: Like A Dragon, was released in 2020.
