The couple lived together for two years, but after the split she said she was constantly harassed by her ex-lover. In May 2021, she claims Ibey threw a rock through her window and Roche filed a restraining order. Ibey routinely ignored it, he said. She says she called the police eight times to report the alleged violations, but to no avail. “He would show up at my work. My boss was like, “Call! Call the police!’ But why am I calling? How many times? They don’t do s__t,” Roche said in a telephone interview.

“I said, ‘That’s how women end up dead.’ I told the defendant. But now — Holy s__t. I never dreamed…” Roche and Ibey met at the factory in Campbellford where they both worked. They began dating, and Ibey soon moved in with Roche from his parents’ home where he lived. “I don’t know what I was thinking,” Roche said. “He was younger than me. The first year was normal. Sophomore year was crazy. He got into drugs. I didn’t know that for a long time.” When Ibey was sober, he was sweet and affectionate. But when he drank he became violent and abusive, she said. The violence culminated on Halloween night 2021. Roche had been with her girlfriend to a costume party and was home in bed when she heard a crash downstairs. “I heard a big bang. All the lights were out. I have a huge farmhouse. I went down my stairs to my kitchen.’

Roche pauses, fighting a wave of emotion. “I swear, they keep asking me if I need advice and I said no, but….” Her voice trails off. “He was sitting in my kitchen with an axe. He took an ax and broke my back door…” He pauses again. This time for a full 10 seconds of silence. “… I just have no control over who is in my house…. Now I have no door…. We’re standing face to face and he’s got an ax in his hand,” she says, her voice shaking. “Thank God my son was coming. He jumped off the ladder, landed on his back. My son was a bodybuilder at the time, thank God. No punch or anything. It just choked him enough that Nick started to pass out. We dragged him out. I scream, “Call 911!” but of course none of us have our phones because we just woke up.”

“He called me every day from prison and I was very afraid not to answer him. It was so offside. But I knew it was coming out. He had just received a slap on the wrist.’ Roche said she informed Ibey’s officer of her fears about his release. “I was terrified. I have a security system. And I have a gun permit. They called me to say they had to release him because of inmate safety. I said, ‘What about my security?’ “They said, ‘Do you have a safety plan in place?’ “I said ‘Yeah, I’m loading my f_____g gun.’ I know I shouldn’t have. He said, ‘You can’t talk like that.’ I said, ‘What would you like me to do? I’m calling you guys? Why has it worked out so well?’ Roche said she was recently informed that Ibey had moved to Ottawa. “The new (probation officer) called and said, ‘Do you want to know how Nick is doing with his anger management?’ I said, ‘I couldn’t understand what Nick is like,’” he said.

“I wanted to call her today and say, ‘Let’s talk about how she’s doing.’ Ibey had just moved into the Woodvale Green condominium his brother had bought on September 1. She posted an ad online for a room to rent, which Pikuyak responded to after she arrived in Ottawa last Thursday to begin nursing studies at Algonquin College. Police were called to the mansion Sunday morning and found her body inside. Ibey was arrested at the scene and charged Monday with second-degree murder. He remains in custody. His attorney, Ewan Lyttle, said Ibey agreed to drop his indictment, implying an automatic not guilty plea, but would not say more about the case. “I am not prepared to comment on the case at this time without having any disclosures,” Lyttle said via email. Ibey appears in court again on September 29. Calls and emails to Ibey’s brother, Chris Ibey, were not returned. With files by Matthew Lapierre
