On Wednesday morning, a statement posted on the resort’s website acknowledged that something inappropriate had occurred. “We were extremely upset to learn of grossly inappropriate behavior associated with one of our annual events. Our first concern is our staff and we are responding to the needs of those affected,” the statement said. “We have hired an interim coach and continue to take steps to ensure the ultimate safety and well-being of our team.” A planned series of concerts at 1909 Kitchen and Bar, the resort’s upscale restaurant, has also been canceled, according to an Instagram account managed by the resort. The bands had been booked all week, but as of Monday they were notified that the series had been cancelled.

The Lonely Dougs, a Tofino-based band, were notified Tuesday morning by the Tofino Resort and Marina that their show, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, was canceled. “The 1909 staff walked out,” was the reason band member Kieran Campbell said he was given because his band couldn’t perform as planned. Alvin Brendan of Vancouver-based Bungalow The Band, who were scheduled to perform Wednesday night, said they had also been told the show had been canceled. Calls to the Tofino Resort and Marina guest service line and 1909 Kitchen and Bar went unanswered. Mitchell and Hamhuis are part of an investor group that includes developer Andrew Purdey, who bought the high-end resort in 2016. Mitchell apparently deleted his Instagram account sometime Wednesday morning, an account he used to share many photos of himself fishing and out on the water.

Mitchell played 907 games in the National Hockey League including four seasons with the Vancouver Canucks from 2006 to 2010. He retired in 2016. Hamhuis joined the Canucks in the fall of 2010, spending six seasons with the club. Hamhuis played 1,148 NHL games before retiring in 2020. Attempts to bring in Mitchell, Hamhuis and Purdey were unsuccessful. Island District RCMP will not comment on the situation. “Only in the event that someone is charged … then the RCMP can confirm their involvement,” Islands District spokesman Cpl. Alex Berube said in an email. [email protected] twitter.com/risingaction
