Albertans can begin pre-ordering the bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccine starting Sept. 21, the province announced Wednesday.

The vaccine will be available to Albertans 18 and older who have completed a primary series, including a mix of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and are at least five months since their last dose or most recent COVID-19 infection. People who have previously received any number of boosters and are at least five months since their last dose or infection are also eligible. “The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine triggers a stronger immune response and provides additional protection against both Omicron and the original strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” the province said in a press release. A shortened interval of three months between doses or infection may be considered, for example, for those at higher risk for severe effects. However, a longer interval between doses is recommended as it leads to a better immune response against COVID-19.

The bivalent vaccine is expected to be available in late September or early October for Albertans ages 12 to 17. Also, starting the week of October 3rd, the bivalent booster will be offered to residents of congregate care facilities, along with the flu shot. Vaccines will be available at participating pharmacies and community health clinics and at select Alberta Health Services locations. Reservations can be made through the Alberta Vaccine Reservation System at alberta.ca/vaccine or by calling Health Link at 811. However, short-term appointments of at least three months cannot be booked online. Some pharmacies may host booths. People living on a First Nations reserve can access doses through nursing stations or public health clinics on reserve. [email protected]
