During Branson’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! On Wednesday, the late-night host told the Abbott Elementary creator/star that she regretted drawing attention during her Emmy acceptance speech on Monday. Branson took the stage toward the end of Kimmel’s monologue Wednesday, holding her Emmy. “I have a small favor to ask,” he said, noting that his commitment to a comedy bit during the ceremony had consumed the time he would have used to thank more people during her acceptance speech and that he would like to claim her again at a time. “Take as much time as you like. I’m going to stand back here,” Kimmel said, retreating to the back of the stage while Brunson thanked a bunch of people, including Abbott Elementary writers.

When the show returned from a commercial break, Kimmel began Brunson’s segment by congratulating her on her win and calling his Emmy joke “a dumb comedy,” then noted that some (including TVLine and his co-star Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph) thought he stole her big moment. “And maybe I did, and I’m very sorry if I did. I’m sorry I did that, actually,” he said. “And also, the last thing I’d want to do is upset you, because I think about you so much. I think you know that. I hope you know that.” Branson thanked Kimmel for his “kind” words. “Honestly, I was in such a moment where I was just having a good time. I won my first Emmy!” he said, adding: “I was in the moment and just having a good time. I do not know. I didn’t see any of that. I saw you, and I saw Will Arnett and my Emmy, and I was like, “Oh my God, I’m having so much fun.” Thank you, that’s kind, but I had a good night.” During NBC’s telecast of the annual awards ceremony, Branson was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. As part of a comedy about having too much to drink, Kimmel lay down on stage as co-host Will Arnett ran through the candidates. Kimmel didn’t move even when Branson walked on stage and had to approach him to get to the microphone. “Jimmy, wake up. I won!” she joked, but he didn’t move. So she put her phone on his chest, told him to hold it, and began her acceptance speech. Kimmel stayed on the floor until she finished and the broadcast moved on to its next segment. A magnanimous Brunson later told reporters that “the piece didn’t bother me that much” and noted that Kimmel was an early supporter of Abbott Elementary, but joked that she “might punch him in the face” during her spot on own program.
