It happened as a set of guards were beginning to exchange duties at a transition. The Queen’s coffin lies on a catafalque, a raised platform, in Westminster Hall, where guards from the Sovereign’s Bodyguard, Household Division and Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London keep a 24-hour watch. The late king’s coffin arrived at Westminster Hall in a royal procession at 3pm on Wednesday and an estimated one million mourners are expected to line up in a bid to pay their respects in person by walking past the Queen’s coffin as she lies in state funeral on Monday morning. Elizabeth’s funeral has become a public holiday in the UK and more than four billion people are expected to tune in to broadcasts around the world – more than half of the Earth’s 7.97 billion population – as the monarch is laid to rest.

Around 500 world leaders and dignitaries have been invited to the funeral, which will take place in London’s Westminster Abbey. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and their Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau have confirmed their presence at the function. We apologize, but this video failed to load. US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron will also travel to the UK to attend the funeral. In addition, former UK Prime Ministers Boris Johnson, Theresa May, David Cameron, Gordon Brown, Sir Tony Blair and Sir John Major have been invited, as has current Prime Minister Liz Truss, who met the Queen in Scotland shortly before she died.
