Rob Portman said Thursday that the Senate will wait until the midterms are over before moving on a bill to codify same-sex marriage protections, after supporters had previously hoped to pass the bill this month. Portman, R-Ohio, was one of the leading GOP sponsors of the legislation, along with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Mich., led the effort for Democrats. Sen. But it does not appear to have been enough to immediately secure the 60 votes needed to pass the bill.
