“Wow a gun,” Sari yelled to her 8th grade classmate, Mara, as the pair searched for trash under a bridge. Carrying garbage bags, the students, who are probably around 12 years old, were busy cleaning up litter near their school in Wognumerplantsoen in the Dutch capital. The activity was part of a city-wide effort by all elementary schools in Amsterdam to be more environmentally aware. Their classmate Toby was nearby and carefully picked up the amazing and dangerous find, taking it under the bridge and showing it to an adult. The Uzi is a type of submachine gun that can fire bullets at a rate of about 600 rounds per minute. Toby earned praise from the police, who noted that because he was already wearing gloves, his fingerprints didn’t get on the gun. “Sari, Mara, Toby and all the 8th graders did a great job and we are proud of you for doing so well,” local police said on Facebook.
