Ford is supercharging its ICE (internal combustion engine) development plan, adding connected technology, highly derivative and hybrid options to our most profitable and popular cars—all in the Ford Blue Oval family—in addition to investing $50 billion in electric vehicles to in 2026.” The new Mustang was unveiled Wednesday night at the North American International Auto Show in an outdoor ceremony on the edge of the Detroit River that fittingly had Windsor as a backdrop.

This engine is produced at Ford’s engine plant in Cleveland. “Performance is everything,” said Ford chief engineer Ed Krenz. “It is our heritage. “The five-liter V8 is the most powerful Mustang GT ever.” The significantly redesigned engine is the fourth generation of the Coyote engine. It adds dual air intakes to facilitate airflow and increase horsepower. The engine produces 420 pound-feet of torque and produces more than 480 horsepower. The new Mustang features a wider, meaner and more muscular body style. “The seventh generation is a modern interpretation of Mustang’s iconic design heritage,” said Mustang exterior design director Chris Walter.

The dashboard has a large screen to display its digital clusters that can be adjusted to colors and even offers a retro 1980s display. The steering wheel has a flat bottom and has been upgraded in both interior materials and appearance. “We’re taking advantage of every pixel,” said Craig Sandvig, Ford Mustang interaction designer. “We can be creative in displaying the necessary driving information and give the driver control over choosing colors, classic Mustang gauges or even a ‘quiet’ screen where only minimal details are displayed.”

Ford also introduced a new Darkhorse Mustang high-performance model, which contains the most powerful version of the engine with over 500 horsepower. The engine will still be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, but will also be available as a six-speed manual transmission. The Darkhorse version will be Ford’s flagship vehicle for its racing programs. The company will compete at most of North America’s major racetracks, but will also return to the scene of perhaps the company’s greatest racing triumphs – Le Mans. “The Mustang is truly Ford’s icon on the road and on the track,” said Ford CEO Bill Ford. “Mustang has raced on all the major tracks around the world. There is no race or track that means more to our history than Le Mans.
