At approximately 12:15 A.M. on Thursday, emergency crews responded to a report of a collision involving a motor vehicle in the area of Lackner Boulevard and Daimler Drive in Kitchener.
Joe Silaschi said he was awakened by sirens outside his home and when he came outside, he saw emergency crews surrounding the vehicle.
“The vehicle was actually on my property,” Silaschi said.
Silaski said he was shocked by the damage and did not expect the driver of the vehicle to still be alive.
One car crash in the area of Lackner Avenue and Daimler Drive in Kitchener. (Submitted) The driver, an 18-year-old Kitchener man, veered off the road and struck a tree and large rock on the front lawn of a residence, police said in a statement. Neighbors said they believe the car that hit the objects stopped it from hitting their house, but added that the engine and transmission came off the vehicle and landed in their side yard. The man was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. Silaski said the rear bumper of his truck was damaged during the crash. “I’ve seen a few accidents, but never where an engine has come off the vehicle, become airborne and travel 80 to 90 feet. There must be a lot of speed there,” he said. He added that he believes speed could have played a role. Other neighbors also raised concerns about speeding in the area. “[It] it will happen again, probably for sure,” said neighbors Joanne Krug and Bill Gray. “They come very quickly. They come very fast down here. No palpitations or anything.” Const. Melissa Quarries with the Waterloo Regional Police Service said the investigation is ongoing by the traffic services unit. Anyone who saw the crash or may have dashcam footage is asked to contact police.
