Apple has confirmed that customers activating new iPhones may experience an issue where device activation during initial setup does not occur over Wi-Fi, saying the issue is “under investigation”. In a note seen by MacRumors, Apple says “there is a known issue with iOS 16 that may affect device activations on open Wi-Fi networks.” To fix the problem, Apple says customers should select “Connect to a Mac or PC with iTunes” in the initial iOS onboarding process when prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network, then return to the previous screen and try again on Wi-Fi until activation is successful. Apple noted in the note that there are no official fixes and that support staff should not “create a fix [case] Unfortunately, the bug is premature as customers around the world are starting to receive pre-orders of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. For new iPhone 14 customers, there is an iOS 16.0.1 update available that fixes an issue with activation and migration during installation. If you’re having trouble activating your iPhone 14, you may need to restore with a Mac or PC to iOS 16.0.1 to fix the error and fully activate your new iPhone. In a support document, Apple tells new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro customers that “iMessage and FaceTime may not complete activation” until they update their new iPhones to iOS 16.0.1.
