The finance ministry says the agreement is between the Public School Employers Association and the councils of school presidents representing 57 locals of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. The trial agreement covers workers in a range of public sector jobs, including education assistants, custodians, maintenance workers and Indigenous support workers in the kindergarten to 12th grade sector. The ministry says the provincial framework represents a part of local staffing agreements and negotiations will now begin at the district level. The agreement is part of the government’s so-called Shared Recovery Order, which applies to all public sector employers with unionized employees whose collective agreements expire on or before December 31. The Canadian Association of Public Employees is the largest union representing support staff in the K-12 sector.
