The Queen’s state stay continues, with representatives from Commonwealth realms invited to pay their respects. The King will meet chiefs of staff at Buckingham Palace before visiting police headquarters to thank representatives from the emergency services who have been involved in the planning and delivery of events during this period. The King and Queen consort will attend a dinner for the generals of the governors. The King will then meet the royal prime ministers at Buckingham Palace. On Saturday evening, the Queen’s eight grandchildren will hold a vigil by her coffin. The Prince of Wales will stand at the head and the Duke of Sussex at the feet. At the King’s request, they will both be in uniform with Harry, as a non-working royal, being given leave for the official occasion. The other grandchildren will be in morning coats and dark formal dress with decorations. A funeral rehearsal will take place inside Westminster Abbey.
Sunday, September 18
Heads of state and members of foreign royal families are expected to begin arriving in London for the state funeral. The King will have an audition with Liz Truss at Buckingham Palace. The King and Queen Consort will host heads of state and official foreign guests at the palace, in what the King’s spokesman described as an “official state event”. A memorial service will be held for the Queen at the Kelpies Carvings near Falkirk, Scotland. Members of the public are asked to observe a minute’s silence at 8 p.m. to remember the queen.
Monday, September 19
The Queen’s state funeral will begin at 11am at Westminster Abbey. Lying in the situation ends at 6.30am. At 10.44am the Queen’s coffin will be carried in a procession from the Palace of Westminster to Westminster Abbey in central London. Members of her family will process on foot from behind. The service will be televised. At the end of the service, the last post will be played and two minutes of silence will follow. Following the funeral, the Queen’s coffin will travel in procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch. From there it will travel to Windsor Castle. Once there, the state hearse will travel in procession to St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, via the Long Walk. Afterwards there will be a ceremony in the chapel of Agios Georgios. Her family will attend a private burial service later that afternoon. The Queen is to be buried alongside her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, at King George VI’s memorial.
