The iPhone 14 Pro’s Always-On screen implementation is essentially a shadow of the lock screen. It drops the screen’s refresh rate to just 1Hz and dims the screen to a fairly low brightness level, while still refreshing and presenting new notifications “with minimal power” thanks to “multiple coprocessors on the A16 Bionic.” Nevertheless, the function still consumes a little battery. That being the case, it makes sense to turn off the Always-On display when you can’t actually use or see it. Apple confirmed in the document that the iPhone 14 Pro’s Always-On display will automatically dim in the following eight scenarios:

Your iPhone is lying face down Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag Focus on sleep is on Low power mode is enabled Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay You are using Continuity Camera You haven’t used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the screen off and on accordingly, including setting an alarm or sleep schedule) Your iPhone detects that you’ve moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

iPhone 14 Pro dims its screen to an Always-On display when it’s locked or idle. Always-On Display is enabled by default on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. You can turn the feature off or on by going to Settings > Display & Brightness and scrolling down to the Always On toggle. Users can customize their Always-On screen by personalizing their lock screen with photos, wallpapers with stylized fonts and colors, and widgets. Your iPhone 14 Pro will return to the lock screen from the Always-On screen if you lift the device up, touch the screen, or press the side button. If you have “Raise to Wake” turned on, lifting and looking at your iPhone will wake it up as usual. You can also swipe up from the bottom of the screen to turn on your iPhone 14 Pro and enable Face ID authentication.
