Matt Gaetz told a former White House staffer that he hoped to receive a preemptive pardon from then-President Donald Trump in connection with a Justice Department investigation into him, according to a report. The claim came in testimony given to the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol Hill riot on January 6, 2021, the Washington Post reported. Johnny McEntee reportedly told the panel that the Florida Republican told him during a brief meeting “that he is being investigated or that there is an investigation into him.” Mr McEntee did not specify who was investigating the MP. Mr. McEntee was asked by the committee whether Mr. Gaetz made the request as part of a Justice Department investigation into allegations that he may have violated federal anti-sex-trafficking laws. “I think that was the context, yes,” Mr. McEntee said, according to those familiar with the testimony. Meanwhile, the former president defended his oft-mocked legal team in a post on Truth Social.

Will the January 6th panel bring an October midterm surprise?

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 coup likely won’t release its report on the attempted coup before the election, Axios reported. But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t make news before November 8. Chairman Bennie Thompson told reporters he did not want the committee to be “perceived as a partisan committee … we’re quite free from that kind of complaint and we wouldn’t want to interfere in elections.” At the same time, the president said that the time before September 28, before Parliament leaves for the pre-election period, “will not be a quiet period” and “the goal is to have … some information, obviously, before November. elections’, although the committee may have an interim report during this period. Eric Garcia reports from Capitol Hill.
