Mohamed Osman was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of violating parole. Osman was arrested overnight, police said in a press release Saturday afternoon. One person was killed in the attack and two others were injured. Police identified the man who was killed as 19-year-old Marcus Maloney. All three victims were taken to The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus. Maloney was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Paramedics said the other two victims were in serious but stable condition.
The call came on Friday afternoon
Police said they received a call about a stabbing at the Ottawa mall around 4:35 Friday afternoon. Videos provided to CBC News appear to show chaotic scenes of a group of youths fighting and dealing with injuries. A video taken near a mall entrance at the St-Laurent LRT station shows what appears to be an altercation involving a knife. The youths in the video are seen punching each other outside a Dollarama. Blood is visible and a voice cries out: “I’m dying.” Another video submitted shows young males sitting on the ground near the LRT station, one of whom is visibly pale and bloody. Voices are heard saying that someone has died and yelling “over here” to the police. Dollarama is located at the mall entrance to the St-Laurent LRT station where video of Friday’s brawl was filmed. Workers say teenagers often fight in the area. (Rachelle Elsiufi/CBC)
Common battles, says the store manager
Dave North told CBC News he saw the aftermath of the stabbing. Two victims were at the bus terminal, North said, and he saw a “guy on the floor with a lot of blood on him.” North said he saw paramedics rush in and begin CPR on the victim. Young people often commit violence near the Dollarama in the St. Laurent, said store manager Jocelyn Bautista. The glass in the storefront is “always broken because of their fights,” Bautista said. “Young people, they always have fights and stuff regularly… people steal all the time.” said an employee named Barbara who did not give her last name. OC Transpo had the St-Laurent LRT station closed Friday afternoon, with trains running through the station but not stopping. In a tweet this morning, OC Transpo said the station is now open and service has resumed. The Ottawa Police Service’s homicide unit is investigating. Police ask anyone with information to call 613-236-1222 ext. 5493.
