Conservatives blasted D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser after she complained Thursday that her city doesn’t have the infrastructure to accommodate the illegal immigrants who descended on Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence Wednesday.
Bowser claimed that D.C. “is not a border city” and is not equipped to handle an influx of immigrants like “Texas” should be able to, she speculated. Critics on social media blasted her for implying that it was the border cities’ job to handle the border crisis, not hers.
Although Bowser claimed her city would welcome immigrants the same way.
The DC mayor’s comments came after Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered two busloads of illegal immigrants to be driven from Texas and dropped off at the US Naval Observatory, where Vice President Kamala Harris is staying.
WHY GOVERNORS ABBOTT AND DESANTIS’ TRANSPORTATION OF IMMIGRANTS WAS ‘POLITICALLY BRILLIANT’: STRASSEL
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser complained that her city “doesn’t have the infrastructure” to handle the illegal immigrants brought in from Texas during the week.
Abbott mentioned Harris by name in explaining his decision to send immigrants to her home, stating, “Vice President Harris claims our borders are ‘secure’ and denies the crisis. We are sending immigrants to her backyard to call on the Biden administration to its own business and secure the borders’.
In a local interview with Fox 5, Bowser responded to the immigrants being turned away in her city, claiming, “We’re not a border city. We don’t have the infrastructure to handle this type and level of immigration in our city.”
He added that the city will deal with it. “But we’re going to create a new normal here in our infrastructure and we’re going to have a human welcome for people in an efficient, you know, service delivery.”
“But we can’t—we’re not Texas,” Bowser asserted.
Conservatives on Twitter found her comments hypocritical.
Australian conservative commentator Rita Panahi claimed Bowser brought it on herself, tweeting, “Sanctuary city mayor says what? Texas didn’t vote for your crazy open border policies, but DC did. “
Pro golfer Steve Flesch responded to the DC mayor, tweeting: “Hey Mayor, it doesn’t seem like any city in America can handle this amount of refugees and illegals. Open turnstiles have created a big problem. So you know someone in DC that could help, bc @POTUS is useless.”
“Incredible callousness. Liberals just don’t have antibodies for adversity,” commented New York Post columnist Miranda Devine.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted a screenshot of a tweet Bowser posted in 2017 that read: “DC values our DREAMers and our immigrant communities – all will continue to find sanctuary in our city. #DACA” and compared it to her statements that DC can’t handle the influx of immigrants. “Hypocrites,” he declared.
The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles tweeted: “Texas should be sending entire fleets of buses to these places every hour.”
“There is ‘one America’ when these leftists want to impose their policies on people who don’t want them, there are different Americas when it comes to dealing with the consequences of their destructive policies. Weird, right?” wrote conservative radio host Derek Hunter, crystallising the hypocrisy.

RealClearInvestigations senior writer Mark Hemingway criticized Bowser for ignoring the plight of border towns as he complained about her city’s ability to handle immigrants. He wrote on Twitter: “So Washington, population 700k, doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle a few thousand immigrants because it’s not a ‘border city.’ Does the mayor of DC think Del Rio, TX — population 35K — has the infrastructure to handle 50K immigrants crossing the border EVERY MONTH?”
Republican congressional candidate Irene Armendariz-Jackson called on Bowser to express her past pro-immigrant virtue in light of this new response. She tweeted: “Texas never asked for this crisis. We can’t handle this either. You are a sanctuary city. That was your statement loud and clear. Or cancel your designation and help us solve this problem or continue to receive your shipments”.
