Florida’s governor has been widely criticized for flying two planes of Venezuelans to the luxury island, where Barack Obama has a $12 million home, as part of a Republican immigration publicity stunt. Mr. Cruz, a US senator from Texas, cast doubt on the legality of the move when he appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. Hannity asked the Canadian-born lawmaker if he would likely face arrest if he personally took a truck, picked up immigrants from the border and drove them across the country. “For you, a citizen, you could easily be arrested, although to be honest Joe Biden’s Department of Justice would not arrest you,” replied Mr. Cruz, who is a lawyer. Hannity, a longtime public critic of the president, feigned offense at the claim. “Oh no, I’m a conservative, I disagree, I’d get arrested, if I was a liberal I’d get away with it,” he said. “Well, that’s true,” Mr. Cruz admitted. Hannity then asked him if the law was clear on human trafficking, to which Mr. Cruz awkwardly admitted: “It’s clear.” He then quickly turned his attention to the White House. “Right now the biggest human trafficker on the face of the planet is Joseph Robinette Bidden Jr.” The group of migrants Mr. DeSantis sent to the Massachusetts island has now been transferred to a large state-supported shelter operation on Cape Cod. After two nights on the island, agencies are “now coordinating efforts between state and local officials to ensure access to food, shelter and basic services for these men, women and children,” according to Massachusetts Gov. Charlie’s office Baker. The governor also plans to activate up to 125 members of the Massachusetts National Guard. Mr. DeSantis faced widespread criticism after arranging flights for 50 migrants, including families with children, most of whom initially left Venezuela, arriving unexpectedly in Massachusetts. He defended the effort, pledging that “more and more” will come out of a $12 million state program he has promised to “use up.”
