Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will fight for the third and possibly final time tonight as the pair look for a clear conclusion to a controversial rivalry. Canelo (57-2-2, 39 knockouts) and “GGG” (42-1-1, 37 KOs) first clashed at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in September 2017, fighting to a controversial draw when most observers believed then-unified middleweight champion Golovkin had done enough to claim victory. Twelve months later at the same venue, the rivals clashed again and produced an instant classic. Again, many felt GGG deserved the win, but Canelo took the titles from the Kazakh with a majority decision victory – marking the first loss of Golovkin’s professional career. Four years later, Golovkin and Canelo are set for another showdown in September at T-Mobile Arena, this time with the Mexican’s super middleweight titles on the line. Alvarez, 32, enters the fight off the back of just the second loss of his professional career, a points loss to lightweight champion Dmitry Bivol in May. Meanwhile, age is not on GGG’s side as the 40-year-old looks to finally score an official victory over Canelo, but he is at least fit – having last fought in April when he stopped Ryota Murata in the ninth round. Tonight, one of boxing’s great modern rivalries looks set to be decided. Watch live updates and results from the main event and undercard below.

The video package that ran before Golovkin retired was pretty entertaining. I’m not sure how they got it approved, considering it kind of looked like anti-Canelo propaganda. The video’s narrator slammed Canelo for “running” his fights with GGG to vacate the titles, and the film even referenced the Mexican’s positive drug test for clenbuterol in 2018. Canelo’s two professional losses came to Floyd Mayweather – in 2013 – and Dmitry Bivol this May. Meanwhile, Golovkin’s only loss as a pro came against Canelo in the pair’s second fight, a less controversial result than their initial draw but still one questioned by many observers.
