LAS VEGAS — Canelo Alvarez retained his undisputed super middleweight championship on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena with a unanimous decision victory over challenger Gennadiy Golovkin in a trilogy fight. Two judges scored it 115-113, while a third had it 116-112 for Alvarez. After the final bell and 36 rounds together, the two rivals shared a long hug, apparently ending a feud that had become personal over the years. Golovkin, aged 40, got off to an incredibly slow start and barely landed a right hand in the first two quarters of the fight, but came on strong late and appeared to win the final four rounds.

Alvarez won the majority in 2018. Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) was coming off an upset loss to Dmitry Bivol in May when he claimed a 175-pound title. Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs), who won a TKO over Ryota Murata in April, fought at 168 pounds for the first time after a legendary middleweight streak where he still holds two 160-pound titles.
