The incident occurred around 9:25 am. on East 17th Avenue at 36th Street SE A 42-year-old man has died after a vehicle crossed northbound 17th Avenue and drove into a bus shelter, police said. Sgt. Colin Foster, who heads the traffic recovery team for Calgary police, said it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors, but added the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed. “The vehicle crossed the intersection with 17th Avenue,” Foster said. “We’re not sure if the vehicle ran a red light or a green light. For whatever reason, the vehicle went up the eastbound curb here and stayed on the eastbound curb until it made contact with a building and a bus shelter. “During contact with the bus shelter, it also struck a pedestrian, a 42-year-old man, and unfortunately the 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.” A man in his 70s who was driving the charcoal gray Dodge Ram 4×4 pickup that struck the bus shelter was taken to Foothills Hospital. He has been taken into custody and is cooperating with police. “What we’re asking is anyone who may have seen the collision, please come forward and help us with the investigation,” Foster said. Southbound 17th Avenue and 36th Street are open, while northbound 36th Street between 16th and 17th Avenues is closed. Police say it appears the man who died was waiting for the bus. “I have colleagues right now who are speaking to his family and will try to find out what his movements were prior to the interaction with the vehicle today,” Foster said.
