It comes after two arrests when police said disturbances broke out at an unplanned demonstration on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Extra officers have been patrolling the area in recent weeks following unrest between Hindu and Muslim communities sparked by an Asia Cup cricket match between India and Pakistan on August 28. In a statement on Sunday night, Leicestershire Police said: “Officers were made aware of groups of young men congregating on Sunday afternoon in the North Evington area of the city. “Officers spoke to them and took steps, including putting in place a temporary police cordon, to minimize damage and disruption to communities.” The force said all fifteen remained in custody just after midnight on Monday morning. Interim Warden Rob Nixon called for calm Saturday night. The force said large crowds formed when groups of young men gathered for an unplanned protest. In a video filmed at 9pm on Saturday night, Nixon said: “We have had numerous reports of disorder breaking out in parts of the East Leicester area of the city. “We have officers there, we are taking control of this situation. “There are extra officers en route and dispersal and search stop powers have been authorised. Please do not get involved, we are calling for calm.” A police spokesman said: “A number of incidents of violence and damage have been reported to the police and are being investigated. “Two arrests have been made – a man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder and a man on suspicion of possession of a bladed object. They remain in police custody. “We continue to call for dialogue and calm with the support of local community leaders. We will not tolerate violence or unrest in our city.”
