SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images After the Uber hacking incident last week, someone claiming to be the hacker behind it is now saying that Rockstar Games has been hacked. As proof of this, videos of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6, which is still in the early stages of development, have been leaked and posted online. The hacker, using a handle teapotuberhacker and posting on the GTAForums fan forum, claimed to have gained access to Rockstar Games’ Slack server and also the Confluence team wiki. Besides claiming to be the same ‘Tea Pot’ hacker who was behind the Uber incident, the threat actor says they had access to GTA 5 and GTA 6 source code along with other assets. For backup, a file containing about 90 videos was also uploaded. MORE FROM FORBESUber Hack Update: Sensitive User Data Stolen and 2FA Door Opened To Hacker? By Davey Winder
Which GTA 6 videos have been leaked?
Bleeping Computer reports that these videos appear to have been “made by developers patching various game features” and feature Vice City locations as well as conversations with non-player characters (NPCs). Some of the videos have since been posted on YouTube, and despite Rockstar Games’ best efforts to issue takedown notices, many are still viewable today. According to this report by Bleeping Computer, extortion appears to be the motive with the threat actor demanding money in exchange for not publishing the GTA 6 game source code. Awaiting comment from Rockstar Games
I reached out to Rockstar Games for a statement, but have not heard back at the time of publication. However, a Bloomberg reporter, Jason Schreier, tweeted that “Rockstar sources” confirmed that the GTA 6 leak is real. I have not been able to contact the threat actor directly, and it is still a matter of speculation whether this is, indeed, the same person behind the Uber hack. However, access to the Slack server is involved, and the very public, boastful nature of the video posts certainly suggests a similar modus operandi. I will update this article with more information as it becomes available.
