After a brief foot chase, the suspect was apprehended and treated for gunshot wounds by officers. He was later taken to Miami Valley Hospital and remained there until he was discharged last week. He was then booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Burton was seriously injured in the shooting. After spending three weeks at Miami Valley Hospital, Burton’s injuries were described as “irreversible” and she was taken off life support on September 1. He was transferred to a hospice facility in Richmond on September 3. Early Monday morning, Dayton police lined West Third Street at the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where the body of Richmond Police K9 Officer Sarah Burton was taken shortly after she died.
