Sandy and Muick, now in the care of Prince Andrew, awaited her arrival at Windsor Castle with their new master as their late owner’s coffin was slowly made its way up the Long Walk. The two dogs were a gift from the Duke of York and his daughters in 2021 and watched as her hearse drove past. The late Queen had more than 30 corgis in her lifetime. Her corgi-daschund cross, Vulcan, died of old age in December 2020, while Candy, another cross, died at Balmoral just days before the monarch aged 18. Sandy and Muick’s presence echoed that of Caesar, a wire fox terrier owned by King Edward VII. Caesar was in the king’s funeral procession in 1910, walking beside a mountaineer in front of the Royal Family itself. Also at Windsor was Emma, the late Queen’s trusted horse. Queen Elizabeth was patron of the Fell Pony Society and led them into her 90s. Photographed astride another fallen pony, Balmoral Fern, in May 2020.
