The 30-year-old is also accused of stealing money and the victim’s vehicle before stealing cigarettes from a Goulais River business. As the suspect fled the area in the stolen vehicle, police say he struck another vehicle and drove northbound on the 17 Freeway. The accused was apprehended in the Batchawana Bay area with the assistance of the North East Region canine unit and the Emergency Response Team. All the details of the incident are described in the following press release: SEARCHMONT – On September 16, 2022 at approximately 3 p.m., members from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sault Ste Marie Detachment, North East Region Canine, Emergency Response Team (ERT) and with the assistance of police first Batchewana Nation The Service responded to a motor vehicle theft from a residence on Highway 556 in the Town of Searchmont. The investigation indicated that an individual attended the residence to deliver food and at some point the interaction between two individuals became violent. [It is alleged that] the occupant of the residence threatened the delivery man with a machete, stole the victim’s money and the delivery car. The driver of the stolen vehicle then went to a local shop in the Goulais River and stole cigarettes. While fleeing the store, the driver struck a vehicle heading north on the 17 Freeway.
Police later located the vehicle abandoned on Mile 38 Road in the Batchawana Bay area. The Dog Unit together with the members of ERT held a track. Shortly after 7pm, the suspect emerged from the bush and was arrested. As a result, Muhammet Kamacihan, 30, from Searchmont, was charged with: • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to Article 88 of the Criminal Code (CC) • Dissemination of threats – causing death or bodily harm, contrary to Article 264.1 (1)(a) of the CC • Robbery by theft, contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the CC • Theft of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 333.1 of the CC • Theft under $5,000 contrary to § 334(b) ) CC • Assault with a weapon, contrary to CC § 267(a) • Dangerous operation, contrary to CC § 320.13(1) • Driving while suspended, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act The accused appeared before the Ontario Bail Court in Sault Ste Marie on September 17, 2022.
