Around noon, Environment Canada warned residents that thunderstorms are expected this afternoon in southeastern Ontario, including the Niagara, Peterborough, Bancroft and York regions.
According to the weather report, stormy conditions are expected to bring strong winds of up to 90 km/h, heavy rainfall and large hail up to three centimeters in diameter.
The federal agency is reminding residents that hail of this size can cause injury and property damage.
“Strong gusts of wind can blow loose objects, damage weak buildings, snap branches from trees and overturn large vehicles,” the advisory states.
“Heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding and pooling of water on roads.”
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management is encouraging residents in these areas to take cover immediately “if threatening weather approaches.”
For Toronto, the Weather Network is predicting a 40 percent chance of rain with less than a millimeter of rain expected to fall.
Environment Canada issues severe storm watches when the weather predicts large hail, damaging winds or torrential rain.
Ontarians can monitor the storm by keeping an eye on Environment Canada’s alerts and forecasts.
