“We’re caught between a rock and a hard place,” says Tammy Burgess, a resident of 202 McNay Street, a London and Middlesex Community Housing building. “This is a place to feel safe, and we’re not safe, we’re not safe.”
He expressed the anger and vulnerability he says many tenants feel after a violent Sunday at the apartment building.
London Police Service (LPS) responded to the residence at 10.45pm on Sunday night where they say a man was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after being stabbed.
“We had a town hall meeting and I mentioned something about it,” says Burgess. “What are we going to do about all the people who come here and don’t stay here? What are we going to do, wait for someone to get stabbed?
Earlier in the day, police responded to an unrelated disturbance at the building.

London police are investigating an apparent stabbing in the 200 block of McNay Street. September 19, 2022. (Bryan Bicknell/CTV News London) Several residents say a woman was hit with a tire iron during an argument. Police have made no arrests in the case. Christine Siegrist, whose mother lives in the building, says she would like to get her out as soon as possible. “Every time I come to visit there are always homeless people, drug addicts around, and I’m worried about my mom’s safety, as well as others,” says Siegrist. Longtime resident Judy Koile adds that the building used to be safe, but now strangers can be seen coming and going at all hours. “They’ve been sleeping in the hallways, in the laundry room and in the stairwell, it’s not what you’d call safe anymore,” says Koile. Most of the building’s residents are elderly and many have mobility issues, according to residents who spoke to CTV News London. Some say they were unable to reach their homes for several hours overnight as a police search appeared to focus their attention on an elevator. “Both elevators were locked,” says Burgess. “He was there until four in the morning. And they couldn’t get up. They are old people! One is in a wheelchair!” Police say no arrests have been made in connection with the stabbing. LPS Media Relations Officer Cst. Sandasha Bough says any information from the public would be very helpful. “The investigation has been assigned to members of our Major Crime Unit and is ongoing,” he says.
